Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, effective treatment developed by physicians and LMTs to help manually drain swelling and inflammation (also called edema) via the lymphatic system. Inflammation is known to be the root of preventative disease. If cells cannot clear waste and receive nutrients, then tissues get sick (inflamed).
We have a system in charge of clearing inflammation! The lymphatic system!
Treatment varies depending on the cause and severity of the inflammation, and PRISM therapists are equipped to handle it all. Benefits include:
- Restored circulation and range of motion
- Pain relief (both acute and chronic)
- Decreased inflammation
- Immune support
- Tissue health
- Deep relaxation via stimulation of the “rest and digest” branch of the Autonomic Nervous System
PRISM’s Peri-Operative Massage Therapy (POMT)
Pre-operative
Before surgery client and therapist will spend time “opening up the system,” reviewing the procedure and preparing the tissues. This supports the various systems of the body. Depending on the surgical sites, visceral MLD and therapy may also be indicated to prepare the patient’s internal structures.
Therapist and client can work together to support the nervous system, as well. Using visualization techniques has also been shown to reduce anxiety and create a feeling of calm and control—two things admitted patients often struggle to maintain for the duration of their stay (and sometimes long after).
Post-operative
This phase utilizes the physiological benefits of lymphatic drainage, as well as our Multi-System Approach. Treatment post-operatively focuses on “cleaning up the system.” Cellular debris from the body’s natural healing process, in addition to medications & anesthesia, can leave the client with a number of impactful side effects. We can help!
POMT combined with our Multi- System Approach has been shown to:
- Reduce swelling and inflammation
- Restore tissue health
- Repair and support lymphatic structures, leading to a myriad of beneficial outcomes
- Induce and support the parasympathetic nervous system, where healing is optimal
- Assist in immune function
- Reduce visceral (organ) pain and dysfunction*
A Multi-System Approach
PRISM’s multi-system approach is what sets us apart. The field of epigenetics has given us solid science to support the impact of stress (cortisol) on DNA expression. We aim to impact cellular expression to create lasting changes in all your cells, tissues, and systems. Training includes:
- visceral massage
- advanced lymphatics
- oncology/medical massage
- craniosacral massage
- fascial/connective tissue system
- trauma-informed touch. This includes helping heal the autonomic nervous system from traumatic experiences, or just the daily stresses of life.
Our comprehensive understanding of the human body and it’s cellular make-up allows us to skillfully access (or avoid) systems to ensure optimal client comfort and care. PRISM therapists don’t just stop at the muscular level, they are trained to access lymphatics and vasculature, viscera, fascia, and more. It’s an approach that helps integrate all the branches of the nervous system. This all culminates in a holistic and impactful session where clients often feel their whole body has been cellularly “seen” and restored.
*Visceral therapy can relieve constipation among many other things. It’s a beautiful modality used to restore function to our most intrinsic structures.
